My Personal Experience Navigating Mindful Eating During Pregnancy:

During my own pregnancy, mindful eating became a transformative practice that helped me slow down, truly savor my meals, and honor my body's needs. By eating more slowly and attentively, I discovered the joy of listening to my body's cues, making better choices throughout the day, and promoting optimal digestion and relaxation. This was especially hard for me as I worked in a restaurant for the entire 9 months where I worked on my feet for hours and often ate on my feet, too! Many of my meals were rushed and not nutrient dense since I could only eat what was available in the moment. Before I started practicing mindful eating, I experienced horrible indigestion- a symptom of pregnancy that I had never had before! By practicing mindful eating, I learned which foods caused my new body and baby discomfort and made healthier food choices overall.

Practical Tips for Mindful Eating:

Minimizing Distractions and Enhancing Awareness:

Creating a calm and focused eating environment is essential for embracing mindful eating. Minimize distractions such as phones or TVs during meals to fully immerse yourself in the experience. Take the time to eat slowly, savoring each bite, and putting down the fork between bites. This practice enhances your awareness and enjoyment of food while fostering a deep connection with your body and the nourishment it receives.

Incorporate Nutrient Dense Foods:

Whole foods filled with phytonutrients and zoochemicals filled with healthy macronutrients and vitamins and minerals provide essential nourishment for you and your baby. Experiment with alternative options for aversions or restricted foods to ensure a balanced and satisfying diet. Additionally, address the common aversion to water during pregnancy by exploring hydrating alternatives such as infused water, herbal teas, or consuming water-rich fruits and vegetables. (I lived off sparkling water with lime).
